The Landromat - Edward Hopper

I picked up on a number of emotions in Edward Hoppers 'The Laundromat' such as isolation, loneliness and depression. She is sitting alone at a Laundromat and yet there is an empty chair opposite her which may suggest she is waiting for someone, or it may symbolise a loss. Her sullen expression as she has her head down towards the table suggests that she is depressed for some reason. I also found that there was a slight sense of voyeurism in that we appear to be looking at her during her everyday life, yet through the eyes of another person. With this in mind and my own imagination the sentence I came up with is:

"Dwelling for a short voyeuristic widow, with a fetish for photographing children"

Basically she is a depressed 45 year old widow who has developed a peculiar fetish for taking photos of other people’s children as she can no longer have her own. She is living her life through the photos of others and so she spends all of her time devoted to either observing her photos or taking new photos of children. She resides in a ‘dwelling’ that is conveniently located nearby a park.

p.s. sorry about the proportions of everything, i do not know what went wrong but when i played the environment as i was creating it it was perfectly fine but now everything is all of a sudden bigger...

The entire structure expresses a sense of power as the offices are overly large and give the sense that they are taking over the surrounding environment, as does both Carlos Slim and Ratan Tata in there attempts to take over other companies.

Carlos Slims Office emulates the idea of power being used to control others. His wealth has caused some resentment in a country where 40 percent live in poverty and i have attempted to render this notion through the jagged windows and the fractured lines of the texture in order to express the pain and suffering of others.



This image capture is effective in empahsising the dominering effect of the powerful on others. The large dark meeting space and office almost give the effect that they are looking down upon the less fortunate.

Tip / Trick

To turn a rectangular brush into a triangular shape you can select "brush clipping". A cursor with a cube and a line through it will come up, you now select the two opposite corners of your square brush.

To cut one side scroll down to the "clip selected brushes" icon, the brush will clip the side that the red line is pointing out towards. If you wish to clip the other side you can select the "flip clipping normal" icon before selecting to clip.

This tool comes in very useful, in particular when you wish to create ramps and other sloped items.
